Blessing of Grapes for Holy Transfiguration
On August 6th, we celebrate the glorious Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This is one of the 12 Great Feasts in the Orthodox Church. In the Orthodox Church, it is customary to bring grapes and other first fruits to church on this day to be blessed and distributed to the faithful. Why grapes? Grapes were traditionally among the earliest fruits of the summer harvest. Offering them to God is a way of giving thanks for His provision—of saying, “We receive all good things from You, and we return them with gratitude.” But grapes carry even deeper spiritual meaning for us. Grapes, when pressed, become wine. And wine, offered on the altar, becomes the Blood of Christ. So these humble fruits become a powerful symbol—not just of thanksgiving, but of transformation. Just as grapes are changed, we too are called to be changed—to be transfigured, to become partakers in the divine life. After the blessing, we take these grapes home—and there are so many simple and meaningful ways to use them. 🟣 Share them: Offer a small plate to a friend or neighbor. Just like the loaves and fishes, the blessed fruits of the Church are meant to be shared. 🟣 Make a simple lenten-friendly charcuterie board with fruits, olives, nuts, and bread. Since the feast falls during the Dormition Fast, it’s a beautiful way to honor the day while keeping the fast. 🟣 Include children: Let little ones help wash the grapes, arrange them, and light a candle as you read the Gospel story of the Transfiguration together. 🟣 Feast with joy: This is a fast day, but the Church gives us a joyful exception: we’re allowed wine, oil, and even fish on this feast. It’s a day of light and gladness, and the Church invites us to celebrate. Blessed feast! Please, Like and Subscribe to our channel at Patristic Nectar Kids!
