Reflection | The Miracles of Baptism

Lecture 1: The Meaning and Institution of Confession

PNP is pleased to present a new six-lecture series by Father Josiah Trenham entitled Demonology: Understanding and Winning the Spiritual Battle. The study of the Church’s demonology is a part of basic catechism and Christian instruction. The Scriptures are replete with teaching on the dark powers. Additionally, it is impossible to appreciate the magnitude of the saving deeds of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, without understanding how He, and He alone, has conquered Satan and destroyed his works. Lastly, Christians are called to fight and win in the spiritual war, and for this reason, it is essential that believers understand their enemies and their tactics. Toward this end, Father Josiah presents in these lectures in-depth studies of the Scriptures, Divine Services, and pedagogy of great saints and teachers on the subject of Satan and spiritual battle.
Lecture titles include:
Lecture #1 Jesus and Satan
Lecture #2 Demonology in the Baptismal Rite and the Divine Liturgy
Lecture #3 Gaining Mastery of Satan: The Life of St. Anthony the Great
Lecture #4 How to Win the Spiritual Battle according to St. John of the Ladder
Lecture #5 Engaging the Unseen Warfare: Fr. Lorenzo Scupoli and St. Nicodemos of the Holy Mountain
Lecture #6 C. S. Lewis’ Screwtape Letters and Demonic Warfare in the 21st Century Falling West

Lecture 3- The Church as a Spiritual Hospital

Christ is risen! This Sunday we commemorate the Samaritan woman, or the Women at the Well, known to us as St Photini. To remember this beautiful encounter, we’re going to do a simple and meaningful craft. We’ll paint flowers on a glass water jar—a symbol of the living water Jesus spoke about.

☦️🫙💧🌺

Here’s what you’ll need:

A clean glass jar, pitcher, or holy water jar

Acrylic paint or paint pens

Paint brushes

Mod podge

Choose Light, joyful colors—blues, whites, pinks, even gold. You can paint flowers, vines, or even drops of water - symbols of life! You can paint directly onto the jar. As you paint, think about what “living water” means to you. What has Jesus healed or renewed in your own life? After your painting is dry, you can paint a layer of mod podge over it to make it waterproof. This jar or pitcher will be a reminder in your home of the transformed life of St Photini and the living waters that Christ offers each of us. If you paint a jar, tag Patristic Nectar Kids so we can share your beautiful creations!

Israel and the Church

Holy Father Averkios the Wonderworker

Holy Father Averkios the Wonderworker

Holy counsel on why a Christian should trust God in every detail of his or her life, and how to do it even in the midst of terrible suffering. This is the first time this treatise is available in the English language.

On Providence

A review of how the Law of God – The Ten Commandments – directs all people to Christ, manifests His beauty and holiness, and reveals God's will for His people in every place and time. Twenty fundamental theological principles concerning God's Law are expounded, each of the Ten Commandments is explained in its original meaning and contemporary application, and special emphasis is given to the unique challenges faced by 21st century believers, who dwell in a post-Christian and secularized context.

Do This and You Shall Live: An Exposition of the Ten Commandments for the 21st Century

If you desire to understand more deeply the inspired guidance of the Church concerning personal prayer, and want to strengthen your own prayer discipline by learning to more faithfully keep a prayer rule, or kanona, these lectures that explore the discipline of classical Orthodox Christian personal prayer will delight you. These edifying presentations examine the content and order of the prayer rule, giving special emphasis to the prayers of repentance, the rule of prostrations, the giving of thanks, the use of the Jesus Prayer, and spiritual reading.

The Prayer Rule

Patristic Nectar is pleased to present a new 8 lecture series by Father Josiah Trenham entitled The Ecumenical Councils: Guarding the Christian Faith. The Orthodox Catholic Faith is a revelation from the Holy Trinity that upholds the entire universe. Throughout the history of the Church the true faith has been attacked by heresies, what St. Paul calls, the “doctrines of demons.” The Holy Church has definitively rejected these heresies and affirmed the true faith through her ecumenical councils. The dogmatic definitions and the canon laws of the ecumenical councils are understood to be inspired by God and expressive of His will for mankind. As such they are foundational sources of the doctrine and practice of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

Will the Converts Last?

The 20th century was the most violent century in human history as 19th century German Marxism was instituted by violent revolution and thoroughly applied by dictators in many countries around the world leading to the deaths of more than 100 million people- many by execution, starvation and the Gulag, and the gathering into heaven of the largest number of Christian martyrs in Church History. These lectures survey the personal lives and ideology of five of the most brutal tyrants, and offer reflections upon the principles behind their tyranny – principles that continue to threaten the West today and are appearing in mainstream American politics.

Why Do I Need to Pay the Church?

Video #3 - Ascetical Discipline in Practical Life

Patristic Nectar Publications is pleased to present a new 5-part lecture series entitled Yielded to God: The Life and Teaching of St. Seraphim of Sarov. The significance of the life of St. Seraphim upon contemporary Orthodox Christianity is so great that it is difficult to fully grasp. Though he was a humble Russian monk born in 1759 his influence has spread to become central and definitive in all the world-wide Orthodox Church. The life of the saints is a tapestry of a life wholly crucified to self and fully yielded to the will of God. His teaching on the purpose of Christian life as the acquisition of the Holy Spirit, and his great intimacy with the Most Pure Mother of God have captured the hearts of God-lovers and provided inspiration for spiritual acquisition for almost two centuries. Lecture #1 Yielded to God: An Overview of the Life of St. SeraphimLecture #2 Acquiring the Holy Spirit: The Purpose of the Christian LifeLecture #3 St. Seraphim and the Mother of GodLecture #4 Marriage, Monasticism, and the Saint’s Diveyevo NunsLecture #5 Spiritual Counsels

Yielded to God: The Life and Teaching of Saint Seraphim of Sarov

Digital Audio - A broad introduction to Orthodox Christianity designed to expose the catechumen to the contours of Orthodox faith and life, aid priests in preparing catechumens to be received into the Church as well as edify Orthodox individuals seeking a better understanding of their faith.
For those seeking to become Orthodox, Catechism is a process of full-orbed Christian formation in which the Orthodox Christian life is inculcated in the learner through participation in divine services, prayer, study, community assimilation, and practice. At the heart of the catechetical process are the catechetical lectures delivered to the catechumens by the priest or the catechist. It is toward this goal of providing a usable introduction to Holy Orthodoxy that the sixteen lectures entitled An Orthodox Catechism have been developed by Father Josiah. This series has been utilized by Father Josiah in parish practice over the course of almost two decades to prepare more than 400 catechumens for reception into the Orthodox Church.
Not having an official Orthodox Catechism in the English language, many parishes and pastors scramble to put together a basic catechism that will adequately expose the inquirer and catechumen to the contours of Orthodox faith and life. It is hoped that this series will aid priests and parishes in preparing catechumens to be received into the Church, as well as edify Orthodox individuals seeking a better understanding of their faith.
These sixteen lectures are presented to catechumens in two parts. Part One: God, Man, Church is traditionally delivered over the eight weeks leading to the Feast of the Nativity of Christ. Part Two: The Holy Mysteries is delivered over the eight weeks leading up to Pasha, when catechumens are being prepared for reception into the Church on Great and Holy Saturday.

An Orthodox Catechism

Theological Lectures covers a wide variety of topics for the Orthodox Christian life. Each lecture series discusses a specific topic over the course of multiple lectures, providing a deep understanding of the topic.

The mysteries of the Holy Liturgy are explained with patristic commentary; the 25 foundational principles of traditional Christian worship derived from the Holy Scripture are outlined; and the unbroken traditions of the Church are explored.

Orthodox Worship and the Divine Liturgy

1. How Jesus Christ Changes Our Marriages

Patristic Nectar Publications is pleased to present a new 7 lecture series by Father Josiah Trenham entitled Heaven: Our True Home. One of the most shocking realities of the preaching and teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ to His early 1st century Judean audience was His fervent, expansive, and repetitive teaching on heaven. Heaven literally permeates the Sermon on the Mount and our Savior’s Parabolic instruction. The Holy Apostles received this single-eyed focus upon the next life from the Lord Christ and passed this teaching on to their disciples in the early Church. Sacred tradition has vivified and animated the discipleship of Christians in their race toward heaven ever since. In these lectures, Father Josiah opens the Scriptures and the writings of the Church Fathers on the subject of heaven in an effort to plant a deep impression of the future life of God’s children, and to stir up a great desire for obtaining it. Lecture #1 Heaven in the Holy GospelsLecture #2 Heaven in the Acts of the Apostles and the EpistlesLecture #3 Heaven in the ApocalypseLecture #4 Heaven in the Church Fathers: A FlorilegiumLecture #5 Heaven: A Definitive End and a New BeginningLecture #6 What is Heaven Actually Like: Common QuestionsLecture #7 Heaven Mislaid: The Eclipse of Heaven in the Secular West and the Christian Response

Sunday of The Fourth Ecumenical Council

Lecture 10- Overcoming the Disease of Pride

Lecture 9: Gratitude

Patristic Nectar Publications is pleased to present an eleven-lecture series by the late Father Thomas Hopko entitled The Holy Trinity. Father Hopko served the Orthodox Church in America as a pastor, and many more years as a Professor of Dogmatic Theology, and then as Dean of St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary. He is revered for his zealous and forthright preaching and has exercised a wide influence over the Orthodox Church in the United States and abroad through his seminary teaching and innumerable parish retreats, his lectures on Ancient Faith Radio, and his many books and publications. These lectures were delivered in February of 2001 to the clergy of the Western Region (eventually the Diocese of Los Angeles and the West) of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. In these lectures, Father Hopko opens to all the dogmatic teachings of the Orthodox Church on One God, His Only-Begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Here Fr. Thomas shares how Christian life is a sharing in the Divine Life itself, and much more. This March 18th, 2024 will be the 9th anniversary of Father Hopko's repose. May his memory be eternal.

The Holy Trinity by Fr Thomas Hopko

Reflection | China's Antichrist: What Mao Teaches the West Today

A presentation of the lives of eight saintly Kings of the first Christian millennium. By the example of these kings Christians are able to gauge what is really valuable in a political leader. Lives of Ss. Constantine the Great, Theodosios I, Justinian the Great, Alfred the Great, Boris of Bulgaria, Vladimir of Kiev, Stephen of Bulgaria, and Edward the Confessor of England are presented. These kings established a model of godly political rule for Christendom, and continue to provide a shining witness of faith in Jesus Christ. In the political realm corruption is so often the norm, but these great kings of the past demonstrate that holiness is possible even in politics.

The Beatitudes, or the blessings, pronounced by our Lord Jesus Christ upon His faithful followers constitute the opening salvo in our Savior’s most famous teaching, The Sermon on the Mount. In this series each beatitude is unveiled revealing the universal character of an authentic Christian. Those who inculcate these sacred dispositions manifest the face of Jesus Christ to the world. By incarnating the qualities of Jesus Christ our Savior, that is, poverty of spirit, mourning, gentleness, hunger and thirst for righteousness, mercy, purity of heart, peacemaking, and the joyful acceptance of persecution - believers become the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

Lecture #1 - The Life of St. Nikolai Velimirovich

Patristic Nectar is pleased to announce a new 9-lecture series by Father Josiah entitled God’s Gift to the West: The Life and Teaching of St. Nikolai Velimirovich. St. Nikolai- the New Serbian Chrysostom – has won the hearts of the entire Orthodox Christian world. This godly bishop was not only a great shepherd of his much-suffering Serbian people, but a Spirit-illumined theologian who spoke the word of truth into the very heart of the darkness of the 20th century. Earning doctorates in his youth in both Berne, Switzerland and Oxford, England, he went on to live through World War I and World War II, traveling throughout Europe and America lifting up his voice and prayer, and setting forth the truth in Christ for the falling West in more than 30 books and innumerable sermons and lectures in innumerable venues in churches, universities, and parliaments before falling asleep in the Lord at St. Tikhon Seminary here in America in 1956.
Lecture titles are as follows: Lecture #1 An Overview of the Life of St. Nikolai

God's Gift To The West: The Life and Teachings of St. Nikolai Velimirovich

A deep look into the longer Orthodox and Catholic version of the precious Old Testament prophetical Book of Daniel, unlocking principles of godly integrity and virtue and providing guidance in the meaning of Daniel’s prophetic visions. Lectures on Chapters 1-6 focus on the marvelous character of the Prophet Daniel and the Three Holy Youths. Having established the integrity and virtue of Daniel, called several times in the text a "man of high esteem", lectures on Chapters 7-12 attempt to explain with patristic guidance the meaning of the stunning visions that Daniel has of the future of the Babylonian, Persian, Greek and Roman Empires, as well as the coming of the Kingdom of God in the person of the mysterious "Son of Man." The eleventh and final lecture is dedicated to Chapters 13-14 which relate the stories of Susanna, Bel and the Dragon that are unfortunately not found in those English Bibles based on the Jewish Masoretic text.

Patristic Nectar is pleased to present a new six lecture series by Father Josiah entitled The Supremacy of Christ: An Exposition of St. Paul’s Epistle to the Hebrews. The Epistle to the Hebrews was written to 1st century Jewish Christians suffering persecution for their Christian faith. Pressured and tempted to abandon Christ and return to their previous religion St. Paul sets forth the supreme glory of Jesus Christ above the prophets, the angels, Moses, Joshua, Aaron and the entire Old Covenant religious system. St. Paul exhorted these believers, and through them multiple successive generations of Christian believers to not neglect so great a salvation but hold fast to Jesus Christ: the same yesterday, today and forever.

The Blind Man with Fr. Jason

St. John Chrysostom writes concerning parenting: "This is not about trifles. We are discussing the governance of the world!" In this series husbands and wives can glean practical guidance from the Scriptures and the Church Fathers on how to sweeten and deepen their marital union, and mothers and fathers can hear the voice of the Goldenmouth call them to take up their parental calling as artists fashioning the highest art-the images of God-and as governors of their own house-cities in which they must learn to establish and enforce laws that give life for, in Chrysostom's words, "God Himself intends to live in this city." This lecture series includes two lectures dedicated to spousal relations and parenting, an audio book recording of St. John Chrysostom's famous text on child-rearing entitled On Vainglory and the Proper Upbringing of Children, and a frame-ready copy of a Prayer of Parents for Their Children (download below).

Lecture 2: Sin as a Disease

🍨 Today for the feast of St Peter the Aleut, we are going to make a traditional Alaskan treat called Akutaq (pronounced a-goo-duck) which is a Yupik word that means “mix them together”. You may have heard it called “Alaskan Ice Cream” as well! This dish has been made with a variety of ingredients that would be plentiful in Alaska including animal fat from whatever animals were hunted like moose, caribou, fish, seal, whales. Then they would add sweet roots, and foraged berries. Mixed together it becomes a healthy tasty treat that would give them lots of strength and healthy nutrients!
This would be a dish that St Peter the Aleut would likely have eaten as it was often sent with hunters on their long journey.

So today let’s learn how to make this traditional Alaskan dish using just a few simple ingredients!

Ingredients:
1 cup lard (or Crisco)
1 cup sugar
2 cups of frozen berries (blueberries, salmon berries, cranberries, etc.)
Wooden bowl

Take the lard and add it to the bowl. Whip it up with your hand for at least three to five minutes until it’s creamy and fluffy.

Pour at least a cup of sugar into the mixture (estimate). And whip it up until the sugar dissolves.

Add the frozen berries to the mixture. And mix it up.
Add more berries to the mixture if you want more.

The akutaq should have a lot of berries in it. Now the akutaq is ready to eat!

Will keep in the fridge for a few days!

Lecture 4 - Creation and Its Consequences, the Sanctity of Life and Ecology.

Discover the true meaning of Christian prayer. In this reflection, Bishop Irenei explains why prayer is not simply a “conversation with God,” but a path to communion with Him. Bp. Irenei shares practical guidance on how the Church teaches us to pray—whether standing, sitting, or praying aloud—and how these practices shape our hearts away from distraction and toward God’s presence.

In these eminently practical lectures Father draws from his and Presbytera Catherine’s more than 30 years of family struggle - the many ways that the love of God can be intertwined with nourishing marriage, raising children, governing a kitchen, bridal chamber, and household, and contributing positively to a neighborhood and the local community.

Patristic Nectar Publications is pleased to present a new 8 lecture series entitled: The Original Church: Lectures on the Acts of the Apostles by Father Josiah Trenham. The Acts was written by the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke, as the 2nd part of his great literary masterpiece setting forth the Life of Jesus Christ in his Gospel, and then in the Acts showing forth the new Christian life made possible by the Lord’s great and saving deeds and the descent of the Holy Spirit. Here in these sacred pages we discover what St. Paul calls “new creation in Christ.”Here we discover what is the birth-right of Christians – that is the continuous miracle of church life. Patristic Nectar Publications is pleased to present a new five-lecture series by Father Josiah Trenham entitled: The Nicene Creed: An Introduction. The Nicene Creed is the singular and universal statement of faith of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. It possesses complete authority in the Orthodox Church and is recited in every Divine Liturgy, and daily in the prayers of the faithful. In these lectures, the Christian faith is summarized, and the content of the Creed itself is examined so that the “faith once delivered to the saints” can be known, embraced, and lived. Lecture #1 The History and Use of the Nicene Creed Lecture #2 The Almighty God Lecture #3 Jesus Christ, the Son of God Lecture #4 The Holy Spirit Lecture #5 The One Church

The Nicene Creed: An Introduction

September 18th

These lectures are offered with hopes that they will inspire a vision for Christian living in marriage, elevate the aspirations of Christians in their conjugal lives, and serve as a protection against the inroads of degrading secularism in the home. Today Christian marriage is under terrible assault. The marriage culture in America is in serious decline, and many believers have little idea of what constitutes a “Christian” marriage. In this series, Fr. Josiah describes the nature of the Divine-Human marriage between God and His people, between Christ and the Church, as well as the contours of authentic marriage between believers in the Church. He also describes the sad decimation of marriage progressively taking place in our post-Christian and secular culture.

Track 5 - (Chant) Ps.1 Blessed Is the Man

Patristic Nectar Publications is pleased to present a new five-lecture series by His Grace, Irenei, Bishop of London and Western Europe for the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, entitled ORIGINS: Creationism, Evolution and an Orthodox Theology of Creation. Well-known patristics scholar and respected arch-pastor Bishop Irenei labors in this series to help believers approach the theology of creation from the presuppositions of the Church instead of through the prisms of evolution and creationism. By an intensive examination of the foundational texts of Genesis, together with numerous sources from the Church Fathers, Bishop Irenei enables us to perceive the Church’s own theological priorities and emphases when addressing the subject of creation. Lecture titles include: Lecture #1 The Lamb Slain Before the Foundation of the World: Moving Beyond Creationism and Evolution Lecture #2 The Order of Salvation: The Creation of the Cosmos as the Beginning of the Church in Genesis Lecture #3 The Fashioning of Man: The Pinnacle of Creation Lecture #4 Creation and Its Consequences: The Sanctity of Life and Ecology Lecture #5 Review with Q and A

ORIGINS: Creationism, Evolution, and an Orthodox Theology of Creation

The sacred psalter has long been the central prayer book of the Church, and the heart of Her liturgical services. Here we have a collection of commonly sung Psalms performed by chanters of St. Andrew Orthodox Church, Riverside, California. Each psalm is given a brief theological introduction by Fr. Josiah Trenham. We hope that this recording will provide pleasure to your ears, and enable you to more actively participate in the holy services, while manifesting to you the depth and wisdom of these sacred prayers.
