Digital Audio - A broad introduction to Orthodox Christianity designed to expose the catechumen to the contours of Orthodox faith and life, aid priests in preparing catechumens to be received into the Church as well as edify Orthodox individuals seeking a better understanding of their faith.&nbsp;
For those seeking to become Orthodox, Catechism is a process of full-orbed Christian formation in which the Orthodox Christian life is inculcated in the learner through participation in divine services, prayer, study, community assimilation, and practice. At the heart of the catechetical process are the catechetical lectures delivered to the catechumens by the priest or the catechist.&nbsp; It is toward this goal of providing a usable introduction to Holy Orthodoxy that the sixteen lectures entitled An Orthodox Catechism have been developed by Father Josiah. This series has been utilized by Father Josiah in parish practice over the course of almost two decades to prepare more than 400 catechumens for reception into the Orthodox Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Not having an official Orthodox Catechism in the English language, many parishes and pastors scramble to put together a basic catechism that will adequately expose the inquirer and catechumen to the contours of Orthodox faith and life.&nbsp; It is hoped that this series will aid priests and parishes in preparing catechumens to be received into the Church, as well as edify Orthodox individuals seeking a better understanding of their faith.
These sixteen lectures are presented to catechumens in two parts. Part One: God, Man, Church is traditionally delivered over the eight weeks leading to the Feast of the Nativity of Christ. Part Two: The Holy Mysteries is delivered over the eight weeks leading up to Pasha, when catechumens are being prepared for reception into the Church on Great and Holy Saturday.

Patristic Nectar Publications is pleased to present a new four-lecture series by Father Josiah Trenham entitled Churchmanship: Learning to Become a Faithful Parishioner. No person is born knowing how to live faithfully as a parish member. Faithful parishioners are made by God. This series is designed to set forth the traditional ecclesial vision for full-orbed church membership in which the spiritual dynamism of life in Christ is expressed in the fellowship of the local church where inspired service to God, each other, and to the world takes place.The four lectures are entitled: Lecture #1 Orthodox Church MembershipLecture #2 The Duties of Parishioners to Each OtherLecture #3 The Duties of Parishioners to Their PriestLecture #4 The Duties of Parishioners to the Mission of the Parish in the WorldThis series is available for free on the Patristic Nectar app.

Patristic Nectar is pleased to present a new 8 lecture series by Father Josiah Trenham entitled The Ecumenical Councils: Guarding the Christian Faith. The Orthodox Catholic Faith is a revelation from the Holy Trinity that upholds the entire universe. Throughout the history of the Church the true faith has been attacked by heresies, what St. Paul calls, the &ldquo;doctrines of demons.&rdquo; The Holy Church has definitively rejected these heresies and affirmed the true faith through her ecumenical councils. The dogmatic definitions and the canon laws of the ecumenical councils are understood to be inspired by God and expressive of His will for mankind. As such they are foundational sources of the doctrine and practice of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.&nbsp;

Ugly Girls?

🥣 Koliva recipe

3 cups of uncooked wheat berries (bought mine from Amazon)
2 cups of finely chopped walnuts (or nut of choice)
1 cup golden raisins
1 cup pomegranate seeds
1 cup graham crackers (crushed)
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
1-1/2 cups powdered sugar (for topping)
Jordan almonds for decoration

Prepare wheat berries according to package directions. Usually have to boil for 40-60 mins and then cool. Once the wheat berries have boiled, drain and rinse and lay on a baking sheet to dry out using paper towels below and above. Once cooled, they will be ready to assemble.

Mix all ingredients together, minus the powdered sugar. Put mixed items into a bowl and flatten the berries using your hand or parchment paper. Dust powdered sugar (generously) on top of the wheat berry mixture. Press down using parchment paper to flatten the powdered sugar and give it a more pristine finish. Then add the Jordan almonds in the shape of the cross on top of it and decorate as desired. Bring to church for the memorial and distribute to those in attendance. Pro tip: Don’t add the powdered sugar decorations until just before the memorial as it tends to absorb any moisture, and can often shift in transport giving it an unfinished look.

This creates about 7 cups of prepared wheat berries once boiled. The dish itself serves about 25.

Patristic Nectar is pleased to present a new six-lecture series by Father Josiah entitled&nbsp;The Seven Signs of Jesus. St. John the Apostle and Theologian, Jesus&rsquo; beloved disciple, wrote his magnificent Gospel in an exceedingly unique way in which he highlighted seven great sign-miracles of Christ in order that the readers might &ldquo;believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing find life in His Name.&rdquo; (Jn. 20:31) In this series Fr. Josiah exposits the first half of the Gospel &ndash; Chs. 1-12 &ndash; where St. John sets forth these amazing miracles, and explains what the sign or message of each miracle is.

In this series husbands and wives can glean practical guidance from the Scriptures and the Church Fathers on how to sweeten and deepen their marital union, and mothers and fathers can hear the voice of the Goldenmouth call them to take up their parental calling as artists&nbsp;fashioning the highest art-the images of God-and as governors of their own house-cities in which they must learn to establish and enforce laws that give life for, in Chrysostom's words, "God Himself intends to live in this city." This lecture series includes two lectures dedicated to spousal relations and parenting, an audio book recording of St. John Chrysostom's famous text on child-rearing entitled On Vainglory and the Proper Upbringing of Children, and a frame-ready copy of a Prayer of Parents for Their Children (download below).

Wisdom for Family Life

What’s the real difference between John the Baptist’s baptism and the baptism of Jesus Christ? In this powerful Orthodox reflection, Fr. Josiah Trenham explains why John’s baptism—though it forgave sins—was only a partial prelude to the life-giving, Spirit-filled baptism offered by Christ. Drawing on Holy Scripture, the Church Fathers (especially St. Photius the Great), and deep Orthodox theology, Fr. Josiah shows why Christian baptism is more than water—it's fire, Spirit, renewal, and adoption into the family of God.

The Signs of Renewal

Introduction to the series The Sacred Canons: An Introduction to Ecclesiastical LawPatristic Nectar Publications is pleased to present a new four-lecture series entitled The Sacred Canons: An Introduction to Ecclesiastical Law by Father Josiah Trenham. The Holy Canons of the Orthodox Church are a part of the sacred deposit of the Christian faith, an essential expression of Holy Tradition given by the Lord Christ to His Church together with other portions of Apostolic Tradition like the Holy Scriptures, the Nicene Creed, the Lives of the Saints, the teachings of the Holy Fathers, the sacred arts, liturgical hymnody, and more. The collection of the canons is called the Pedalion, or in English, the Rudder. The Canons function in the Body of Christ as a rudder functions in a ship- guiding the vessel on its proper course and steering her into the green pastures of God’s providential blessing. In these lectures, you may obtain an overview of the Apostolic Canons, the Canons of the Ecumenical Councils and the Local Councils approved by the Ecumenical Councils, the Canons of the Holy Fathers (with special attention shown to the 92 Canons of St. Basil, the Great), as well as a concluding lecture surveying the canonical teaching on marriage.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lecture 3: Taming the Tongue

If you desire to understand more deeply the inspired guidance of the Church concerning personal prayer, and want to strengthen your own prayer discipline by learning to more faithfully keep a prayer rule, or kanona, these lectures that explore the discipline of classical Orthodox Christian personal prayer will delight you. These edifying presentations examine the content and order of the prayer rule, giving special emphasis to the prayers of repentance, the rule of prostrations, the giving of thanks, the use of the Jesus Prayer, and spiritual reading.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Beatitudes, or the blessings, pronounced by our Lord Jesus Christ upon His faithful followers constitute the opening salvo in our Savior&rsquo;s most famous teaching,&nbsp;The Sermon on the Mount. In this series each beatitude is unveiled revealing the universal character of an authentic Christian. Those who inculcate these sacred dispositions manifest the face of Jesus Christ to the world. By incarnating the qualities of Jesus Christ our Savior, that is, poverty of spirit, mourning, gentleness, hunger and thirst for righteousness, mercy, purity of heart, peacemaking, and the joyful acceptance of persecution - believers become the salt of the earth and the light of the world.&nbsp;

Bishop Irenei addresses common misunderstandings about the authority of Scripture, the Ecumenical Councils, and the Orthodox rejection of papal infallibility. He explains how the Church understands the inerrancy of the Bible, the role of the Councils, and why true authority is always found within the living life of the Church.

Lecture 3: The Great Litany, the Amen, and the Antiphons - The Liturgy of the Catechumens

A discourse on the important subjects surrounding the nature of Holy Scripture and its relationship to the Church of Christ. Subjects addressed include the miracle of inspiration, the nature of Scripture as the words of the Word - the very speech of the Holy Trinity; the inspired process and criteria of the canonization of Scripture; the Bible as a locus of spiritual experience, a Theophany and spiritual medicine against the passions; how the Scriptures are utilized in the liturgy and the Christian home; and how to avoid the false dichotomies between the Church and the Bible, Truth, and Jesus Christ.

Lecture 8- Overcoming the Disease of Gluttony

Patristic Nectar is pleased to announce a new 9-lecture series by Father Josiah entitled God&rsquo;s Gift to the West: The Life and Teaching of St. Nikolai Velimirovich. St. Nikolai- the New Serbian Chrysostom &ndash; has won the hearts of the entire Orthodox Christian world. Earning doctorates in his youth in both Berne, Switzerland and Oxford, England, he went on to live through World War I and World War II, traveling throughout Europe and America lifting up his voice and prayer, and setting forth the truth in Christ for the falling West in more than 30 books and innumerable sermons and lectures in innumerable venues in churches, universities, and parliaments before falling asleep in the Lord at St. Tikhon Seminary here in America in 1956.
Lecture titles are as follows: Lecture #1 An Overview of the Life of St. Nikolai

Father Josiah Trenham + Bishop Irenei

What does true repentance really mean? In this powerful conversation, Bishop Irenei and Father Josiah explore repentance not as guilt or fear, but as healing, transformation, and the very essence of becoming truly human. Drawing on the wisdom of the Church Fathers, Saint Ephrem the Syrian, and the Orthodox tradition, they reveal how repentance is not a moment—but a lifelong journey of growth, joy, and communion with God.

<div style="text-align: left;">There we learn about the One True God, the human being fashioned in God's image, and God's meaning-infused creation. These texts, which have always formed a central element in the Church's catechetical ministry, present the most important of Christian convictions. These chapters are particularly relevant today as secularism has suppressed these essential truths from the western mind, and priests can no longer assume that these basic theological affirmations are believed by those coming to the Church or raised in the Church.&nbsp; These lectures are presented as an aid in the formation of catechumens and as an effort to set forth the transcendent beauty of the glory of God, of the human being, and of God's magnificent world.&nbsp; &nbsp;</div>

Homily | Elevating the Cross in Our Lives - Exaltation of the Cross 2025 (Sep 14, 2025)

This New Testament letter is a circular catechetical piece, the very crown of Pauline theology, and written by the Great Apostle while he was an "ambassador in chains" in prison. This sacred text unveils God's mystery and the unsurpassable riches that all believes possess in Christ. It is of massive pedagogic import for the Christian life, revealing both the saving acts of the Holy Trinity on our behalf and the contours of a Christian walk that is worthy of the Gospel.

Do the California Fires Have a Meaning?

🍨 Today for the feast of St Peter the Aleut, we are going to make a traditional Alaskan treat called Akutaq (pronounced a-goo-duck) which is a Yupik word that means “mix them together”. You may have heard it called “Alaskan Ice Cream” as well! This dish has been made with a variety of ingredients that would be plentiful in Alaska including animal fat from whatever animals were hunted like moose, caribou, fish, seal, whales. Then they would add sweet roots, and foraged berries. Mixed together it becomes a healthy tasty treat that would give them lots of strength and healthy nutrients!
This would be a dish that St Peter the Aleut would likely have eaten as it was often sent with hunters on their long journey.

So today let’s learn how to make this traditional Alaskan dish using just a few simple ingredients!

Ingredients:
1 cup lard (or Crisco)
1 cup sugar
2 cups of frozen berries (blueberries, salmon berries, cranberries, etc.)
Wooden bowl

Take the lard and add it to the bowl. Whip it up with your hand for at least three to five minutes until it’s creamy and fluffy.

Pour at least a cup of sugar into the mixture (estimate). And whip it up until the sugar dissolves.

Add the frozen berries to the mixture. And mix it up.
Add more berries to the mixture if you want more.

The akutaq should have a lot of berries in it. Now the akutaq is ready to eat!

Will keep in the fridge for a few days!

The Three Types of Christians

Patristic Nectar Publications is pleased to present a new 7 lecture series by Father Josiah Trenham entitled Heaven: Our True Home. One of the most shocking realities of the preaching and teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ to His early 1st century Judean audience was His fervent, expansive, and repetitive teaching on heaven. Heaven literally permeates the Sermon on the Mount and our Savior’s Parabolic instruction. The Holy Apostles received this single-eyed focus upon the next life from the Lord Christ and passed this teaching on to their disciples in the early Church. Sacred tradition has vivified and animated the discipleship of Christians in their race toward heaven ever since. In these lectures, Father Josiah opens the Scriptures and the writings of the Church Fathers on the subject of heaven in an effort to plant a deep impression of the future life of God’s children, and to stir up a great desire for obtaining it.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Lecture #1 Heaven in the Holy GospelsLecture #2 Heaven in the Acts of the Apostles and the EpistlesLecture #3 Heaven in the ApocalypseLecture #4 Heaven in the Church Fathers: A FlorilegiumLecture #5 Heaven: A Definitive End and a New BeginningLecture #6 What is Heaven Actually Like: Common QuestionsLecture #7 Heaven Mislaid: The Eclipse of Heaven in the Secular West and the Christian Response&nbsp;

Lecture 4: Worldliness

In this reflection, Father Josiah Trenham speaks on the Gospel of Matthew 18:23–35, warning against the “damnable gap” that forms when we receive God’s mercy but refuse to show mercy to others. Drawing on the parable of the unforgiving servant and the example of St. Dionysius of Zakynthos, Father Josiah exhorts us to let God’s grace shape our relationships and daily life.
